What is the PID ?

Person Identification Data (PID) is a set of attributes consisting of personal attributes, such as name, surname or date of birth, used primarily for identification purposes, such as Know Your Customer (KYC) processes. Its purpose is to identify a natural person or legal entity or object while accessing online or offline services. These attributes are provided by an authentic source, such as registers of municipalities and can be derived from eIDAS notified eID schemes. In Germany this may be the physical eID.

However only authorised PID providers can issue PIDs into the European Digital Identity Wallet(EUDI-Wallet). PID providers are trusted organisations defined by the member states and can be the same organisations that currently officially issue ID documents. Every member state is obligated to provide a PID as well as an EUDI-Wallet.

Benefits for your organsiation

The PID offers several advantages over current electronic identification methods such as eID and video identification. In the context of the European Digital Identity Wallet, it enables organisations to enroll users in KYC processes within seconds. This saves time and money and eliminates the need for third-party identification offers. At the same time, it allows the organisation to request other documents that can streamline and complement the KYC process, such as driving licences, proof of income, employment registration and more.

PIDs adhere to high KYC compliance standards with the level of assurance high across the EU, ensuring a high level of security and trust for both the organisation and the user. Finally the mandatory acceptance of the PID and EUDI-Wallets as identification means security for organisations when strategizing and planning to build use cases based on them.

Issuance by PID Provider

01

In order to issue a PID to an EUDI-Wallet, the attributes of the PID must be derived from an authentic source. A PID provider uses the information provided by the register and issues the valid PID to the user's EUDI-Wallet, given the person has been identified.

Verification

01

Once having a valid PID in the EUDI-Wallet, a user can easily identify himself to an organisation to access digital services.

02

Organisations can use an EUDI-Wallet Connector software, such as the one provided by Lissi, to request and verify the PID data. This streamlines KYC processes with a high level of assurance.

03

While the issuance of the PID into the users EUDI-Wallet is a one time process, use-cases with a high level of assurance might still require the user to provide an additional security aspect, such as the physical ID card.
