The Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund (German Federal Pension Fund) and Lissi partnering in the DC4EU pilot, to demonstrate how EUDI Wallets streamline cross-border social security.

The European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet is set to transform the way citizens interact with public services across the EU. Lissi GmbH is playing an active role in this transformation by providing the critical infrastructure that enables seamless and secure digital interactions. This case study explores Lissi's collaboration with Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund (DRV Bund) within the DC4EU pilot project, demonstrating how EUDI Wallets can streamline cross-border social security processes.

The Vision: Cross-Border Digital Social Security

One of the goals of the EUDI Wallet is to enable seamless proofing of social security status across the entire European Union. The DC4EU (Digital Credentials for Europe) pilot, an EU-funded project, is actively exploring the potential of EUDI Wallets for various cross-border public services. In this important initiative, Lissi has partnered with Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund, acting as the infrastructure provider to develop a proof-of-concept (PoC) that showcases the EUDI Wallet's capabilities in the social security domain.

PDA1 Use Case: Streamlining Mobility

A key focus of the DC4EU pilot with DRV Bund was the PDA1 certificate use case. The PDA1 is a crucial document for individuals temporarily working abroad within the EU, ensuring legal clarity regarding their social security status for both employers and employees. The pilot explored how EUDI Wallets can power the cross-border proofing of these essential documents. Beyond initial issuance, the project also successfully piloted revocation and verification processes for the PDA1 certificate, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to digital document management.

Lissi's Impact: Simplifying EUDI Wallet Interactions

Through its expertise in digital identity infrastructure, Lissi supported the development of the DRV Bund prototype, providing the necessary backend solutions and technical guidance. This prototype featured a demo web portal for credential issuance and verification, powered by the Lissi Connector.

Lissi Connector Integration Highlights:
  • Issuance:
    • Users could easily select the credential they needed (e.g., PDA1).
    • The Lissi Connector generated a credential offer as QR code, which users could scan with their EUDI Wallet.
    • Before the issuance of the PDA1 an identification was performed using the PID (Person Identification Data) ensuring transparency and security.
    • The PDA1 credential was then issued to the user's EUDI Wallet.
  • Verification:
    • Verifiers could select the credential they needed to check (e.g., PDA1).
    • A QR code was generated, initiating a presentation request to the user's wallet.
    • The user's EUDI Wallet displayed the requested data, prompting for user consent before sharing.
    • Once consented, the data was securely shared with the verifier and validated by the application.

Lissi Value (Demo Highlights):

The demo clearly showcased the tangible benefits of Lissi's solution:

  • Easy pickup code implementation: Simplifying the user onboarding and credential retrieval process.
  • Seamless integration of DC4EU Data Store concept with Lissi Connector: Enabling efficient and secure management of digital credentials.
  • Successful PID authentication: Demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in various identity scenarios.
  • Effective credential verification: Ensuring the integrity and trustworthiness of shared data.

Interoperability: Towards a Digital Europe

Interoperability is crucial for the success of the EUDI Wallet ecosystem, particularly with over 3,500 social security stakeholders across Europe. Lissi's participation and contributions to large-scale pilots, including EWC, and POTENTIAL and support in DC4EU, help advance interoperability within the digital identity landscape. This involvement also ensures that our solutions remain aligned with the Architecture and Reference Framework (ARF) and the upcoming Implementing Acts of the eIDAS 2.0 regulation.

Conclusion: Lissi - Your EUDI Wallet Partner

Lissi helps organisations design and implement EUDI Wallet use cases. We support them in navigating the complexities of regulatory frameworks and technical integration, guiding them towards production-level interoperability. Our collaboration with Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund (DRV Bund) within the DC4EU pilot is a good example of how Lissi empowered DRV Bund to implement and demonstrate eIDAS-compliant use cases in the shortest possible time. Enabling organisations to interact seamlessly with EUDI Wallets.

We extend our sincere thanks to Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund and key individuals who made this PoC possible: Nicklas T. Urban (Accenture), Thomas Ebbinghaus (DRV), Helge Michael (Lissi) and Sebastian Bickerle (Lissi).
